Cerebral malaria is a severe complication that can occur following malaria infection and can cause permanent neurological deficits. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a marijuana component that has neuroprotective benefits.
In this study CBD was added to the standard anti-malarial treatment to evaluate the restoration of brain function in malaria infected mice.
The findings show that treatment with CBD increased survival, decreased inflammation, and restored greater levels of brain function than the anti-malarial drug alone.
