In order to determine whether plant-derived cannabis medicinal extracts (CME) can alleviate nerve pain symptoms unresponsive to standard treatment, a consecutive series of double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled single-patient cross-over trials with two-week treatment periods was performed.
18 patients with multiple sclerosis, 4 with spinal cord injury, 1 with brachial plexus damage, and 1 with limb amputation participated in this study.
The authors concluded that marijuana extracts were able to reduce nerve pain in patients where standard treatments had already failed.
