Traumatic brain injury (TBI) events leads to significant numbers of death and disease conditions. It is well documented that marijuana (cannabis) offers neuroprotective benefits to the brain.
This study was performed to determine the association of death following traumatic brain injury in relation to testing positive for THC, a major marijuana component. There were 446 cases meeting all inclusion criteria for this 3-year retrospective review.
Slightly more than eighteen percent of the analysis group tested positive for THC. The percent of death after TBI for non marijuana users was 11.5%. The percent of death for those with marijuana in their system at time of TBI was only 2.4%.
Having marijuana in your system is associated with less death for adults who sustain a traumatic brain injury.
