Sometimes the most surprising relationships show up when looking at research. This study analyzed hospital discharge records for adults 18 years of age or older who had been diagnosed with risky alcohol use, and using an algorithm matched 30,713 of them as cannabis (marijuana) users with 30,713 non cannabis users.
They revealed that risky alcohol drinking combined with cannabis use is associated with a 25% decreased probability of alcohol-associated gastritis in patients.
Alcoholic gastritis is a superficial erosive disease of the stomach associated with risky alcohol use. The group does not promote using marijuana to offset risky alcohol use, but rather that the plant should be studied to determine what specific ingredients or extract can be used to treat various forms of gastritis.
