This study set out to determine the effects of long term cannabis (marijuana) use on physical, mental, cognitive, and socio-economic aspects of health. 50 subjects under 45 years of age who had been taking cannabis almost daily for 5 years or more, had not taken any other intoxicants regularly, and were not having chronic mental or physical illness were evaluated.
Detailed neurological and psychiatric examination was done in each case to detect the presence of any neurological or psychological abnormality.
This study could not find any evidence of deterioration either in work performance or in social relationships. Neither did it show any physical illness, or impairments of memory or intellect.
These findings corroborate another study from all the way back to 1977 which found no impairment from long term marijuana use. In addition, another study of 30 long term users compared to 30 non-users found no significant physical abnormalities.
