It has been said that the cannabis sativa (marijuana) plant contains over 500 compounds, and it is essentially this treasure of natural compounds that provides its many numerous and growing list of benefits. One of these families of plant compounds is called flavenoids, which you may have heard of due to their likely health benefits when consumed.
All the way back in 1981 a study was performed which showed that a cannabis extract without any THC or CBD was able to reduce catalepsy (immobility, rigidity, trance-like state) that had been induced in mice. The cannabis components responsible for this are in a sub-category of flavenoids, and were called cannflavins A & B.
Their effectiveness is a result of their ability to counter two inflammatory chemicals (prostaglandin E2 and the leukotrienes) created in the human body. The effects are so powerful that the anti-inflammatory effects were described as 30 times more powerful than aspirin.
More recently, this study reaffirms that cannflavin A & B are unique to cannabis sativa and explored methods of synthesizing the molecules for medicinal purposes.
