The authors of this study did a secondary analysis of data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study. They were investigating any relationship between cumulative lifetime and current marijuana (cannabis) use with abdominal fat, subcutaneous fat, intramuscular fat and any decreased function of the liver at midlife.
2902 participants who were between the ages of 18-30 years old in 1985-1986, were present for clinical examination in 2010-2011. 84% of the participants reported a history with marijuana, with 11% reporting use in the last 30 days.
Contrary to concerns some may have, marijuana users did not have any increased fatty tissue or decreased liver function in mid-life.
