Compared with individuals who have never used cannabis (marijuana), studies show that users have lower rates of diabetes and obesity. In this study, data was gathered from 4,657 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2010.
The goal was to investigate the relationship between marijuana use and fasting insulin, glucose, and insulin resistance. Out of this sample, 579 were current marijuana users and 1,975 were past users.
The authors found that current cannabis use was associated with 16% lower fasting insulin levels and 17% lower insulin resistance. They also found a relationship of marijuana use with lower waist size.
