Marijuana Use Lowers Fasting Insulin In Obese

In this study, data was gathered from the 2009-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The purpose was to search for any association of cannabis (marijuana) use on insulin resistance on individuals with varying body mass indexes.

Information was gathered on 129,509 adults age 18-59 years, with a nearly equal ratio of male to female.

Those who were obese and used marijuana less than 4 x per month had fasting insulin levels on average 52% less than never marijuana users. Former marijuana users of 8 x per month or more, but had quit use less than 12 months previously and were obese, had fasting insulin levels 47% lower than never marijuana users. Those who were obese but had quit marijuana use 12-120 months or more in the past, still had fasting insulin levels 36% lower than never marijuana users.

These findings were not true for other body mass index sizes.
