According to this Science Daily piece, excitotoxicity can be involved in neurological diseases such as Multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease. Excitotoxicity is a term used to explain the chemical events that cause nerve cell damage and death.
Sometimes the source of the chemical problem is in the foods we eat. The more processed a food, the more likely it will contain chemicals categorized as excitotoxins such as MSG.
Perhaps not surprisingly, research has shown that THC from cannabis (marijuana) can actually reduce the swelling and decrease the nerve damage from such chemical assaults on your brain and nerve tissue. In this study using MRI’s on rats, it was found that swelling was reduced by 22% and cell damage was reduced by 36%.
THC as well as CBD from marijuana both provide protection to brain and nerve cells.
