Marijuana Component Eases Heroin Cravings

Cue induced cravings are those that occur as a result of things in a persons environment that encourages their habit of drug use. Cue induced cravings and anxiety are two of the strongest factors that contribute to relapse and continued drug use.

In this double-blind, randomized, placebo controlled study CBD, a component of cannabis (marijuana), was found to significantly reduce anxiety and cravings which normally follow as a result of experiencing drug cues.

Physiological measurements included analysis of heart rate and cortisol levels in the saliva.

Individuals were given up to 800 mg of CBD daily for three days. The positive effects were seen for a full week after the final dose of CBD.

All participants in the study had been diagnosed with heroin use disorder but were currently drug abstinent.
