Some may have been exposed to the idea that using marijuana (cannabis) is associated with depression, or major depressive disorder (MDD). However this causality is not well documented in the literature.
This study set out to explore the association of cannabis use and MDD, if any. The data was gathered from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.
In the conclusion the authors state: “Our findings do not support a longitudinal association between cannabis use and incidence of MDD.” Therefore this study states that using marijuana as a natural medicine does not create depression, unlike many synthetic medications.
Marijuana is considered natural medicine by many and that is an important factor for a significant number of patients.
