While the active ingredient of cannabis (marijuana) known as THC is considered to be a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, this study sought to determine the safety and effectiveness of medical cannabis oil containing THC as an addition to other pharmacologicals. Specifically, they sought to evaluate it’s effect on alleviating behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.
The results showed that there was a significant decrease in delusions, agitation/aggression, irritability, apathy, sleep and caregiver distress. The authors state that adding medical cannabis oil with THC to the regimen of Alzheimer’s patients is both safe and promising.
