Medical Marijuana Laws Not Associated With Increased Crime

There are individuals and organizations who disseminate propaganda stating that the legalization of marijuana poses a danger to the public in regards to increased violent crime and property crime.

At the time of this study, 20 states and the District of Columbia had medical marijuana laws. Data was collected from the FBI for all 7 Part I offenses: homicide, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, and auto theft—for each state between 1990 and 2006.

The findings indicate that marijuana laws do NOT create an increase in any of the seven crime types. In fact, medical marijuana laws were associated with a decrease in homicide and assault.

Next time you hear a prohibitionist spreading lies and propaganda you can counter it with facts from the FBI.
